The West's Awake

When all beside a vigil keep
The West's asleep, the West's asleep
Alas and well may Erin weep
When Connaught lies in slumber deep
Her lakes and plains smiles fair and free
Mid rocks her guardian chivalry
Sing O let man learn liberty
From crashing winds and lashing seas

And often in O'Connor's van
To triumph dashed each Connaught clan
And fleet as deer the Normans ran
Through Curlieu Pass and Ardrahan
And later times saw deeds so brave
And glory guard Clanricarde's grave
Sing O they died their lands to save
At Aughrim's slopes and Shannon's wave

And if when all a vigil keep
The West's asleep, the West's asleep
Alas and well may Erin weep
When Connaught lies in slumber deep
But hark, a voice like thunder spake
The West's awake, the West's awake
Sing O hurrah let England quake
We'll watch till death for Erin's sake

The Dawning of the Day

One morning early as I roved out
Through the woodlands of Lough Glen
The sun shone brightly oer the fields
The corn was green again
I left the town as I roved out
And wandered on my way
Who should I meet but my colleen sweet
At the dawning of the day

No cap or cloak did this maiden wear
Her neck and feet were bare
Down to her back in ringlets hung
Her lovely nutbrown hair
A milking pail was in her hand
She was lovely, young and fair
And the morning light was shining bright
At the dawning of the day

On a mossy bank I sat me down
With me lassie by my side
With gentle words I courted her
And I asked her to be my bride
She said, Young man, don't tarry me
But let me go my way
And the morning light was shining bright
At the dawning of the day

Sonia Snell

This is the tale of Sonia Snell
To whom an accident befell
It happens as it does to many
That Sonia went to spend a penny
And entering with modest grace
The properly appointed place
Provided at the railway station
She sat down there in meditation
The poor dear girl was unacquainted
That the seat had just been newly painted
When Sonia realized
Her inability to rise
She tugged and pulled, she screamed and yelled
And still she was securely held
Some passersby looked in and sniggered
And all they said was, I'll be jiggered
The station master and his staff
Were most polite, they didn't laugh
And takin her be hands and feet
Tried to remove her from the seat
A carpenter arrived at last and said, I know what I'll do
And he promptly sawed the seat in two
Sonia rose at last to find
She had a halo on behind
They rushed the wooden-bustled girl
To the nearest hospital
And takin her by hands and head
Placed her facedown upon the bed
When the doctors all came on parade
Ready to give immediate aid
And the surgeon said, Upon my word
Has anything been so absurd?
Has anyone, I do implore,
Seen anything like this before?
Up spoke a student unashamed
Ah, frequently, Sir--but never framed

Come with Me over the Mountain

One night when the bright moon illumined the sky
And I first took a notion to marry
I put on me hat and away I did hie
You might think I was in a great hurry
When I came to a place where I often had been
O my heart gave a leap when me darlin I seen
I lift up the latch and I bid her goodnight
Saying, Will you come with me over the mountain?

Arrah what sort of (?) has got into your head
I am glad to see you so merry
It's now twelve o'clock and you should be in bed
Speak low or you'll waken me mammy
If you think I am jesting, my jesting is true
I've courted twelve months and faith I think it should do
And before it is morn I'll be married to you
If you'll come with me over the mountain

Sure if I was to make an elopement with you
It might well be intended with danger
O the neighbors will censure and tattle us two
And our friends would all frown in a wonder
Now just let them censure and tattle away
Consult with yourself, sure it's very near day
And I don't give a pin what the whole of them say
If I once had you over the mountain

Sure I am resolved now at home for to stay
I think it more fitting and better
So fare you well darling, I now must away
And that puts an end to the matter
O stop, stop a moment till I get me shoes
O my heart gave a leap when I heard the glad news
She ran to the door saying, Maybe I'll choose
To elope with you over the mountain

And by this time the moon had gone down in the west
And the morning star brightly was shining
We both made our way with the greatest of haste
For the wedding our two hearts were pining
And the sagart came to us without more delay
He married us both on that very same day
And sure now it's often we chat when we've little to say
Of the trip we took over the mountain

Nora Daley

O there may be pleasant places
Lots of gold and lovely faces
In our own land and away beyond the sea
But my heart was free from sorrow
When I thought not of the morrow
And pretty Nora Daley smiled on me

She was kind and sweet and simple
On her cheek there was a dimple
And her little feet tripped slightly oer the lea
But there's no such place in Galway
And I'm minded to stay always
In Kilbannon where my Nora waits for me

Where the round tower casts its shadows
Round the sweet and fragrant meadows
There runs the river Clare with happy glee
They may praise the banks of Shannon
But my heaven's in Kilbannon
And Nora Daley there to smile on me

When the big campaign is over
I'll be no more a rover
I'll settle down with Nora as my wife
In Kilbannon Church I'll wed her
I will not think of war or weather
Sure I think I've had enough of single life

So there may be pleasant places
Lots of gold and lovely places
In our own land and away beyond the sea
But give me bog and tillage
In that little roundtowered village
And Nora Daley there to smile on me

A Paradox

As I sat on the back of me ass
A paradox came into my mind
The half of me ass was in front
And the whole of me ass was behind
